………………

UNC’s campus life looks different this year, but according to Tarah Burnette, the staff advisor of Carolina Cupboard, students need help from the campus food pantry as much as ever.

Did you know?…

• 58% of college students reported experiencing food insecurity in the last 30 days

• 20% of students at four-year schools reported very low food security

• 57% of Black students reported food insecurity

• 56% of first-generation students were food insecure

None of this would surprise Burnette, who has been feeding students from her desk drawer for years. “It’s a calling,” she says, about her drive to assist students in need.

Burnette supported the efforts of two UNC students, Roderick and Shawnna Gladney, to transform their vision of a student-led food pantry into reality, opening Carolina Cupboard in 2014.

Today, the organization serves 400 students annually – mostly first-years, and many of them making multiple trips to the pantry throughout the school year.

Carolina Cupboard receives no funding from the University, so the group’s student leaders rely on donations and are actively pursuing 501c3 nonprofit status. Every dollar donated to the organization goes to providing food, toiletries and household supplies to students in the UNC community.
